Gatlinburg is the hardest place we work, and it is all geography. Steep grades, tight switchbacks, narrow streets, and traffic that does not move for long stretches of the year.
Brake trouble is the signature call here. Vehicles coming down off Newfound Gap Road with brakes that have been worked hard the whole way, and drivers who realize something is wrong at the worst point on the descent.
How the roads run around Gatlinburg
The Parkway runs through the center and is the only real through route. Newfound Gap Road climbs into the park and the grades on it are sustained rather than short. The side roads up to the cabins are steep, narrow and often switchbacked.
A large wrecker cannot get up some of those cabin roads at all. When that is the case we work from the nearest point a truck can turn and recover to there.

Get off the road at the first safe pull-off rather than continuing. Fading brakes get worse with use, not better, and there is no stretch of that descent where you want to find the limit.
